That’s a tough question to answer. It really all depends on what’s wrong with your AC system— and believe us, there are a lot of different things that can go wrong with an AC system.
So the best answer we can give you is this: In the New Mexico area, an AC repair can cost anywhere from $120 to $3,000.
We know, that’s a very wide range.
That’s because a lot of different factors determine the cost of an AC repair, including:
- What’s wrong with the system (as mentioned above)
- Whether or not the system is still under warranty
- The contractor that you choose
Below, we’ll explore exactly how those 3 factors will influence your AC repair cost.

Cost factor #1: What’s wrong with the system
Like we mentioned above, a ton of different things can go wrong with an AC system. And it’s tough for professionals to truly know what your specific issue is unless they can inspect the unit in person.
The bottom line, though, is that more complex AC issues typically result in higher repair costs.
For example, a complex AC issue, such as a faulty AC compressor usually comes with a high price tag (usually upwards of $1,500+).
A failing compressor is considered a “complex” issue because the compressor itself is a very complex and expensive part, which increases what you’ll pay for parts. Also, it can take up to 6 hours to replace an AC compressor, which increases labor costs. And finally, because the AC compressor is such an integral part of the system, compressor issues that are neglected can lead to other failed parts in the system, which raises the overall repair cost.
On the other hand, a relatively “simple” AC repair, such as a clogged filter, costs less because the replacement part needed (in most cases a standard fiberglass filter) is cheap and the time for a pro to replace it and resolve the issue is minimal (usually under 20 minutes).
Cost factor #2: Whether or not the system is under warranty
If you need an AC repair, two types of AC warranties might help you out in terms of out-of-pocket costs:
- The manufacturer’s warranty
- The labor warranty
We’ll explain the differences between these 2 warranties and how to check the status of each.
The manufacturer’s warranty….
…is provided by the AC manufacturer (i.e. Trane, Lennox, etc). This warranty covers the cost to replace any AC parts that fail due to manufacturer error. However, manufacturer’s warranties never cover the cost of labor, only the cost of the replacement part.
Keep in mind that the time period for coverage all depends on the particular part. Most manufacturers will cover basic AC parts for 1-2 years but cover more complex parts like the compressor and/or evaporator coils for anywhere from 5-7 years. If you purchased an “extended” warranty when the AC was first installed, you’ll be covered for even longer.
Unfortunately, manufacturers make it easy to void your warranty. For example, you could have accidentally voided your AC warranty by:
- Not registering the AC with the manufacturer within a certain time period after the AC was installed
- Not scheduling regular AC maintenance with a licensed AC contractor
- Replacing a faulty part with an aftermarket part (a part not specifically made for your AC’s specific make and model)
- And more…
Wondering if your AC repair is still covered by the manufacturer’s warranty?
To do that, you’ll need to know and write down the:
- Brand of your AC
- Contact info for that brand’s local distributor
- Model and serial number of your AC unit
Call the local branch of your AC brand (#3) and provide them with the model and serial number of your AC unit. They should be able to find your AC warranty details and let you know if the repair is under warranty or not.
The labor warranty…
…is covered by the contractor who first installed the AC system. This warranty covers the cost of labor to fix any problem that arises due to a faulty installation. Keep in mind that the labor warranty typically doesn’t cover the cost of any needed replacement parts, only the cost of labor.
This warranty typically provides coverage for anywhere from 1 to 3 years after installation, depending on the contractor.
Wondering if your AC repair will be covered by the labor warranty?
To do that, contact the company/contractor who initially installed the system and provide them with your AC model and serial number. They should be able to look up your system to determine if your repair will be covered by the labor warranty.
Cost factor #3: The contractor you choose
Not all contractors are equal in skill. As such, higher-skilled contractors typically charge slightly higher prices for AC repairs.
However, you don’t want to skimp on quality and skill when it comes to an AC repair. Sure, it may be tempting to choose a contractor who offers rock-bottom prices. But the reality is that a company that offers much lower prices than competitors will typically have to cut corners and rush the job in order to make a profit. And that can cost you more in repeat work in the long run.
Instead, we suggest that you vet your contractor carefully before hiring them for an AC repair.
To thoroughly vet a contractor, you should make sure that they:
- Have been in business for at least 5-10 years
- Have experience repairing your particular AC type
- Can provide references upon request
- Will provide an upfront AC repair cost estimate in writing
- Have good reviews on sites such as BBB (Better Business Bureau) and Google
