Aluminum wiring was a popular electrical material in the early to mid ‘70s. It worked great in the short run. What people didn’t know was that it doesn’t age well. The older it gets, the more it expands and contracts, leading to loose connections and electrical problems. If your home has aluminum wiring – and in New Mexico, there’s a good chance it does – then there are a few things you need to know.

What you need to know about aluminum wiring:

  • Aluminum wiring is safe to have in your home
  • Over time it can cause loose connections and electrical problems
  • It can be repaired using the pig-tailing method
  • It doesn’t have to be a deal-breaker for purchasing a home
  • You can avoid issues with aluminum wiring by getting an electrical inspection
