It’s hard to believe that fall is upon us. The kids are back in school and the temperature is starting to drop. Fall is an amazing time of year in Santa Fe. With the change of season brings fun events, our favorite foods, age-old traditions and cool, crisp weather.

1. Green Chile

Probably one of our favorite things about fall is the smell of roasted green chile in the air everywhere you go. For us New Mexican’s there’s no greater smell around this time of year. There are plenty of places around town to pick up some fresh green chile.

2. Zozobra

The annual burning of Old Man Gloom is a highlight this time of year. There’s nothing quite like it, with the 50-foot-tall puppet moaning and groaning while fireworks light up the sky. It seems like this event just gets bigger every year as thousands of people fill into Fort Marcy park to watch him burn! This year there was a record-breaking crowd of 48,000.

3. Fiestas de Santa Fe

What’s better than starting off Fall than heading downtown to the plaza for all the fun and festivities of the annual Fiestas. We love the food, entertainment, parades, and processions during the City’s biggest celebration. We’ll see you on the plaza this weekend. Don’t forget the celebration begins today. 4. Changing of the Aspens

As September winds down the aspen leaves start to transform into a beautiful glowing array of color. There is no better time to take a hike through Hyde Park to see the full colors on display.

5. Harvest Festivals

Nothing says fall like a harvest festival, and Santa Fe is no different except that we have a harvest festival experience like no other with El Rancho de las Golondrinas living history museum. Where else can you string chile ristras, make tortillas and crush grapes for wine by foot. Aside from a visit to las Golondrinas, there are also various harvest festivals this time of year at many churches throughout the City.
